I like option 2 because it's less invasive on the engine bay and you don't have to work around 2 massive bars when doing any type of motor bay maintenance.

but i dig the less invasiveness to begin with of cage 2
i gotta take some time and look at how feasible it is- Will

If you go with option 2, would you still have something that goes across the engine bay on flanges to connect the two 'arms' that go from the current cage to the bumper?sigpic

i probably wouldnt have a cross bar regardless, if i can fit one on the firewall option, paired with the front bumper, i feel that would accomplish the goal without adding more tube in there- Will

Will,
Your designs...
Well, they suck donkey balls.
Just sayin.
See if theres enough room to do #2, but bend the fender bars down behind the headlights with a 90* bend and connect to the frame. then do a bar from the apex of one bend to the other across the engine bay, mirroring at the front of the bay the one that spans the A-pillars. Gusset accordingly.

bar across the engine would be cool too
As to the crossbar... I'd have to explain the idea going through my head but it involves making it removable but stable.2000 XJ: "The Black Jeep"MK2 Jetta > M3Chairman of the Chechnyan Space Program

you really should have a cross bar going across cause if you were to lay it over on the front end there would be nothing keeping the front of the bars to bend inward, possibly causing more damage then preventing. i got to see if i can find a picture of my old race car. it had a removable bar by welding a pice of tube inside the main tubes and a nut sert of good size into the cross bar. this allows you to have a sturdy piece of cross bracing but if you have to remove it its not a big deal two bolts and its out. p.s. i know i missed a shit ton of commas in that lol.Dizz dizz go sleep sleep

for the most part i definitely get the idea of the cross bar, i had done a lot of engine cage research/looking when we were making DM
what i had come across at the time that i liked
tied to the bump can in the same location as mine now, and the frame like andy said
