  • Should I or Should I not purchase another vehicle.

Im torn. Been planning to buy some little shitbox car for like 500 bucks to drive me back and forth to school this winter to save on gas and not have to rust up the Jeep with the copious amounts of road salt we have here in Upstate NY.

Would probably uninsure the Jeep from like December to the beginning of April and drive said shitbox instead, then go back to driving the Jeep when there is no road salt and 40 mile roundtrip commute every day. I'm not a fan of winter wheeling anyways.

My buddies think its a stupid idea to take an offroad vehicle off the road for the winter. But I honestly am only really "required" to drive in bad snow like 2-3 times a year, and only once in my 3 winters of driving have I really needed a 4wd vehicle it was so bad, just makes it easier to drive.

Then there is the economics of it, after buying the car and fixing all the stuff that is bound to go bad on a 500-600 dollar vehicle I dont know if the gas savings and maybe slightly lower insurance payment are going to even put me ahead at all. Especially the issues that are going to come with my XJ sitting 4 monthes a year then the car sitting for like the other 8 monthes.

And finally rust. I have never seen an XJ older than 15 years old in all of upstate NY that wasn't half eaten due to rust, and plus its just so nice not to have every other bolt snap off when im working on it.

What do you guys think, worth it or waste of time/money?

Sounds like a plan to me. Maybe you can find a cheap older Subie Legacy or something and still have AWD when you need it.

a lot of those high mileage ones have headgasket problems.

My friend has an 87 accord hatch that he loves. He paid 100 bucks for it. It's a piece of shit by all standards, but it starts every time and runs great. Bought some blizzaks and it goes everywhere in the snow. If I were you I'd buy some cheap honda fwd and then score some used blizzaks off craigslist.

Just the 500 dollars you spend initially on the car will be more than it would have been to just continue gasing up the jeep.

          Do some math.

i had this issue, with my xj there always have been little periods of downtime whether it be a week or a month, depending on what broke or what i was doing to it.

So i went out and bought another xj, a 99 with only 90k miles for a damn good price. i like having it whenever i need it and the convenience of another vehicle is great..... but...... and its a big but....

I feel like i wasted money, cause i will never get back what i spend for the thing, its 11 years old with 108k miles and while it runs great i'll be lucky to get the 4k. I originally wanted to buy a truck and unregister the green jeep, and now as i save this is becoming more and more of an option i think i want to go with.
No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

Having a tow rig is nice but expensive you really are better off with the white xj. There is always people to call if you need a tow like AAA or anyone with a truck and trailer(just dont call me)

Speaking from having a fast car, a commuter car, a tow vehicle, and an OHV it really gets to be too much. Sometimes it's nice but just go with the white XJ it is much easier and will save you loads on your insurance. Also in terms of gas mileage it is not what you drive but the way you drive it. I get better mileage in my lifted XJ than my commuter which is supposed to have 35mpg and the XJ much less but my commuter is peppy and I take full advantage of that pep where as the XJ it is hard to take it over 3k rpm just because I don't want to hurt it. Basically what I'm saying is that you should commute in the XJ. It will get great mileage if you drive it well and you will never have to worry while you are in school if a storm hits.

I think i've decided, im just gonna stick with just the XJ.

Some math told me that i would save about 600 dollars a year on gas, but then I have to buy the car, maintain it and do a bunch of other stuff just to drive something I probably wont really like to drive in the first place. Plus I work part time now, but once I start school i'll be making a little less since i'll just have my paper delivery job.

I'll spend the money I save on washing the salt off my Jeep a few times a week at the car wash.
