Would something like this effect oil prices substantially?

I'm not sure to be honest.

One one hand, this rig is only used to drill a well and not "harvest" oil so I guess it depends on how how quick they planned on using this well.

One the other hand, more strict regulations might be placed on the drilling of wells so it might take longer to do making less of a surplus. Also BP and Transocean is going to get hit HARD with fines and everything and typically they don't eat this cost

now what would be going on with the fish and ocean population, is there going to be some kind of relocation or is it just too big?

No, there is no way this could even possibly be a serious question

Read this in Pirate Chit Chat, some dude who was working for Halliburton, which is the cementing company that was working on Deepwater Horizon.

Yeah we were on the rig. It will be a long time before they release what actually happened. There will be so many law sutes and fines before this is all said and done. I have been following the story. There are all kind of rumors out here. The word is that the people that died were all on the floor. what I have heard is that they cemented the production liner and set packer in the hole. They were going to temporarily abandon the well. When they went to displace the riser with seawater the well blew back. They said that it knocked people out of their beds and broke a few peoples limbs. Somebody was not following mms procedures. It really suprises me since transocean and BP are super safety. So horrible...

x2 they are really fucking cool.

It sucks that an accident like this happens, but those are the risks with drilling, and with how many platforms there are, its actually amazing that this is the first big drilling related incident.
No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

the problem is cleaning it up/collecting it if they could. ocean waves don't make it easy to separate water from oil. especially 300,000 tons a day or whatever it was

Actually I'm surprised it happened. Transocean has one of the best safety records of all drilling companies. That was one of the big factors in me applying to work with them. Given their time constraints, they really bring "safety first" to a whole new meaning.

There really is no way to collect it that I know of. If you could collect it you can centrifuge it out of an emulsion. Usually a lot of the fuel we get on the ships has a high water content and thats what we do before running it in the diesels.
