So I have been looking to buy a CJ and finally found one. Its a 79 with 195k miles. The body has rot spots all over and the paint is in horrible condition. The owner wants 2000 for it, I think he's smoking crack. What would be a good offer to make on it?

The only good thing is it has a new carb and both hard and soft tops.
    I need the 4.0L!!!!!!!!!!!

tell him 800 bucks cash, if he doesnt take it, or at least come down alittle bit, or even think about it leave it alone. Wait two weeks call him to see if anyone else came to look at it or made offers. Be like look you're never gonna get 2k with the economy the way it is, 800 cash. And show him the money. Times are tough and with something like that, people fold.

my buddy only got a 1000 bucks for his cj7, with a completely rebuilt drivetrain, motor down through the axles, and almost not rot on the frame, body was a diff story.
No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

Cash and a trailer never did me wrong in the past. Tell him "here's the cash, sign over the title load it up. Done deal"

I wouldn't even bother with that. I have bought jeeps with rot spots all over and they turn into parts jeeps pretty fast.

ya its a beat down economy... I'd say that if you can notice a really excited wife that you're their to look @ it start low...

Street tickets are a big factor for my sellers as of late. I had to move 3 non runners with the XJ I was towing home... Gotta love driving her in 4 low as the first drive!

My CJ's always lost money because its a Jeep thing...NOT

I sold it on Ebay for $2600 and the dude flaked. Now my neighbor has it for $1500...I paid $2500 and did dual flow masters w/new exhaust for $400 before I found my current '86 CJ-7 w/stock Dana 44 rear.

Does it have the 4 speed with the non syncro granny gear? If yes, buy it but dont mention it. Just bitch its not a 5 speed. The T-18 wide ratio is a sweet set up. Most 79's are rusted frames and or bodies. I have some extra stuff from when I had mine if you need lemme know. A 304 w/T-18a was why I bought my '79. It will either be a t18 or a t176 if a 4 speed. Both are good but T-18 is bomb proof and you can twin stick the Dana 20 behind it for cheap

Good Luck...you'll snag it cheap if you have cash and a trailer. I was giving away primo Magtec diff covers to sell my K20 as the heater core broke the day he came to test drive it and take it.

A guy dropped his dead or alive card (re:my Heeps)on my wife 2 weeks ago

Rust is a little different than rot... body mounts and frame sections with rot take a lot of time to fix right. I read a little about the factory CJ T18 on Novaks knowledge page and I guess if you could score a rotted 79 cj7 with a V8, T18. and title for $800 that would be a good deal, then buy a rot-free wrangler with a bad drive train and swap everything.

The valid point of this is cj7's have already slip-c boxed frames which are notably weaker than their younger wrangler counterparts. I have been given jeeps in that shape merely to part them out. A cj7 is honestly not something I would wheel nor daily drive. I would find a 92-95 YJ and swap the front clip, otherwise you may as well be looking at it for its scrap value.
