This war is different from any other war, the enemies do not wear uniforms, and do not fight in form, they are simply "unlawful enemy combatants" in civilian clothes all the time. When there are american troops on the ground, a camera can be misinterpreted for a weapon, which seems like what happened.
As for that van, you try to help an enemy, you yourself are an enemy, there were ground forces on their way, who knows what could have been in that van.
I do not know why people are amazed by this, this is war. It's not supposed to be pretty, innocent people die, what if it really was an RPG? there would be no questions. I have friends over there and yes i think their lives are more valuable than that of the Iraqi people.
As for the reasons they are there in the first place, thats not in their hands. Do you think that all soldiers are war junkies wanting to kill everything they see? they are simply doing their job and not cutting corners cause "that might not be an RPG". In the end of the day they have a gun for a reason, to get their job done and get home safely.
As for the people that leak things like this so the public can think that the heros fighting for our freedoms are some kinds of criminals, i hope they rot in hell.
