It certainly is an interesting idea, but not one that is likely to catch on or become mainstream. Auto manufacturers protect their IP (intellectual property) viciously, and for good reason. Sharing data openly has it's advantages and disadvantages. What if you design something innovative in an open source environment and someone else takes that idea and patents it, denying you the ability to manufacture and sell said product? Also, $50,000 is way above what most people will pay for a car, and when you think about economies of scale, the only way to bring this number down signifigantly is to start operating like any large manufacturer, which means moving away from the open source concept.
Also it is ugly.
