This would be great information if we still lived in the 70s, early 1980s.

The AR15 is accurate out to 600 yards and have currently surpasses the M1A at service rifle competitions.

The Caliber differences are menial. Yes, the 308 hits harder, but take into account that you can carry twice as much .223 ammunition, and against humans and white tail deer, the 223 is just as effective as the 308. Ammo debates are pointless these days. The Damage per shot only applies if you are ONLY using ball ammunition.

2 lbs heavier is being generous. Almost 3-4 lbs heavier with a loaded magazine. A full size M1A gets really heavy really fast compared to an AR15 carbine.

This is one of those 'Want to know how I know you watch too much TV' things.

i knew i could count on you to set me straight! haha. i realy like ruger and marlin as brands so thats why i was looking at the ruger AR. I have a marlin bolt action that i got on my 11th birthday that shoots better and more accurate (with just open sights) then any other gun i have shot.

i know for 100% fact that i want a lever gun. all the shop has was 44 and 30-30's and i wasnt soo keen on those rounds. maybe i should just scope the availability of ammo for the 44 and get that then wait for a .357 (sold out even on gun genie)

so yeah, i'll get then lever....... and an AR (that i'll build). any good sites you can point me to phil on the steps i should do for building one?

Just wait for when you find the one you want. That is why I still don't have a Marlin 357 yet. I want a Marlin 1894 in 357 so bad, but no one has one. One day I'll find it.

As for building the AR15, all you need to do is buy a Lower:

Buy this at a gun store, do the paperwork. This is considered the Actual Firearm as it is the only serial numbered part. The rest of the parts, like barrel, upper ETC you buy online, you buy WHAT YOU WANT and you turn your AR into something you want from the get go. If your tastes are simple, just buy an AR15 Carbine with a flattop, but my tastes stretch far beyond the scope of what most companies have, so I build them. Get an Idea of exactly what you want the AR15 to look like, and I can help you get the parts.

Totally eliminates cleanup and the fact that you would have to field dress it.

It's actually the Remington ACR now. That design has been floating around for what seems to be years now.

If it comes out next year, I'll be surprised.

You have a better chance of getting the FN SCAR if you really want something cool, but just have $2500.

At least some SCARs are on the civilian market.
