sure you can "beef the shit outta it and be done" but any aftermarket cover (offroad oriented, no plastic or chrome shit) is more beef than anyone will ever need.

I have rammed my cast, $65 rockcrusher and solid cover into boulders at speed and they are fine. the bottom lip is just wearing off along with the housing from dragging it over rocks, as would any other cover

I could also say the same thing about cages, but then I would be wrong.

The increased weight of a diff cover from 1/4" to 3/8" is nowhere the same as using .188 wall tubing instead of .120, or 2" instead of 1 3/4". Also cages can and do flex and bend. It is part of the design and helps to absorb energy in a crash or rollover. To perform it's function as a cover that seals properly, a diff. cover must be as rigid as possible.
