So, do I need to rent an SUV to drive place to place at the lakebed?
        will a car be okay?

You don't need anything to get around on the lakebed, just walk. Hell you can walk to backdoor in under ten minutes. A normal car can get you from the road to the lakebed. Getting to further trails from the lake bed you will need a 4x4 SUV or truck.

You could also make friends, but BLM doesn't like riding in the bed of trucks from what I remember. May be wrong.
