So I have been looking around and thinking about what I want to get out of this trip.
The RV idea sounds great and all, but im not really sure if we are going to stay on the lakebed for the full week.
And if we don't stay the whole week there.... im really not opposed to tenting it

Part of me wants to stay out on the lakebed all week, but I also want to see more than just desert. (haven't done much in the way of traveling in my life)

What are the MAIN days and nights to stay out at the lake bed?

You literally have no idea what the desert nights can be like. If you want to tent it, be fully prepared to have your tent blown away by 30-40 mph or even stronger winds. Last year, even the large car tents that are staked into the desert lake bed were torn asunder and the year before, the RV was swaying in the wind so bad it was like we were on the seven fucking seas. If you want to tent, rent a car trailer and secure the fucking shit out of it and bundle up, it gets really cold at night. Which brings up another valid point, bring cloths for all types of weather. Temperature ranges from 60-70 degress during the day then drops to the mid 30s at night.

The main nights, I dunno, it's tough to not be there, but if you want, Wednesday night to Friday night, Friday night being the biggest party night of them all. It's tough to compete, though, every night is party night at KOH. If you want to see more than just the desert, do what we are doing this year, just leave a day earlier, see the sights and sounds of SoCal for a few days then head to the lakebed like Tuesday or so. We are arriving in Ontario on a Friday morning, hanging out for the rest of the day and spending the night in Ontario, then Saturday we are picking up the camper and heading to the lakebed for the week. Last year, Zullo decided at 1:30 in the morning that a Vegas trip was in order and they partied hard in Vegas at 3 in the morning...on a Monday.

Tuesday and Wednesday are LCQ days, Thursday they have some races that we seldom follow and Friday is the big race day. Saturday is recovery day.

your absolutely correct.... I have no clue what to expect.
(but I figure if I watch enough survivorman, ill make it through anything)

I did look into hotels. It looks like Barstow is about an hour away from the lakebed?
I found pretty decent hotels with fair pricing there. The drive might be a little far, but that's no worse than the daily commute I do everyday.

There are hotels closer in yucca valley, about 1/2 hour. Just don't go to the sizzler.

And seriously, if you are going to tent it. Put a tent on your tent, then a tent on that. Or a tarp and another tarp. The wind at night can be brutal then mix that with the sand it is blowing at 40mph.

you can hotel it if you are okay with driving back & forth each day. but if you do want to hang out at night and stay around and drink with people...you'll have to figure out who will play DD and get you back KOH tends to be very non-sober at night. LOL

if you want to "sight-see" the surrounding area of JV doesn't have much. a lot of it are run-down ghetto areas...ontario, yucca, etc. and X2 BILLION on sizzler. just don't do it.

if you really want to sight-see, you will want to drive a bit towards the LA area. depends on what you want to see. between will & i we've spent a lot of time in the JV/socal area and we can tell you what areas to avoid

Well, plane tickets to LAX seem to be cheeper from what I see and I can't find a rental place anywhere else but Enterprise at LAX that will rent a small SUV to someone under 25 ( includes an underage fee of $160)

So I'm almost thinking cruise and sight see SoCal the first few nights and rent a hotel during the race.

DD isn't an issue because my buddy is a designated DD at all times because he dosent drink.

King shock party night, aka wednesday.... That's a heavy drinker night, but realistically every night is.
No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

Rent a uhaul box truck... Stay in that, not so bad from what I've heard. Our friend jake did that, just don't try and bring a girl back to it

You would love big bear, ski slopes less than an hour from j.v. Last year they had fresh powder on race day morning

Ya dont tent it. I went to bed with the tent essentially collapsed on myself every 50 seconds from the wind gusts. How it survived the night i do not know but it was unusable after that trip. Luckily sis has great members that let me crash in the rv one nite ( how 3 guys including zullo fit on that pullout bed i will never know). But ya i wouldnt recommend a tent out there at all.
