  • Riddle Me This

Why do car companies now sell small oddly shaped crossovers to serve the market that station wagons formerly used to occupy?

Does America really hate station wagons/love crossovers that much? Now, I'm not sitting here saying estate cars are my jam or something, but if I had to choose one or the other, I'd go with the practicality of the wagon.

    Explain this to me.

Example 1: BMW X1 vs. 3 series wagon

    vs.

Example 2: Volvo XC60 vs old v70 wagon

everything is a peanut shaped crossover. even the pathfinder and forester have turned into them. the forester was kind of one before but now the shape fits with everything else out there

this sums it up....i can tell lots of older cars apart just at a glance, nowadays i HAVE to actually read the name on the door/trunk/whatever and the hood ornament to even get close to what it is....ford looks like a kia looks like a chevy looks like a hyundai looks like a....goes on and on. all cars are made now to have that same generic average guy look to it.

Because people want the look/feel of an SUV in the body/convenience/practicality of a sedan. Also the term "station wagon" has earned a lame connotation. SUVs got immensely popular, and got bigger and bigger, and then fuel costs went through the roof. So now people feel more "reasonable" in these.

Instead of choosing something that suits their needs, they choose something that suits an image/idea, and does neither task its intended for particularly well.

So we get these awkward things called crossovers until America moves onto its next misguided desire of the masses.

              hows that?

                  is this considered a crossover?
Idk why but I'm in love with this and want it for my next car.

                      Also you speak of practicality.

I see crossovers as a shorter wagon. I don't know how they can be consider SUV -ish. (Maybe because of their proportionality)

And to a lot of people, wagons are large and not really needed. When's the last time you saw a old Volvo station packed to the max other than the local recyclable can collector.

Not sticking up for the new crossover fad but for a lot of people it's probably a better choice than a boat going down the road.
