The law specifically names flash hiders. You can't have one on the gun even if it is welded if you have a pistol grip and a detachable box magazine.

See this doesn't make any sense to me....I have seen many AR-15 rifles for sale in local gun shops with flash hiders, and they come with a detachable mag and pistol grip stock. A few friends of mine actually own some that they bought like that in CT. I believe the law states that you are allowed 2 of the "evil" items in conjunction with a detachable mag...a pistol grip being one and the flash hider being the 2nd.

Sometimes the "flash hider" is actually a muzzle brake, which is legal to have on a semi mag fed rifle in CT. The problem is I can't even really tell the difference between a hider and a brake and neither can anyone else. Please correct me if I am wrong on this Phil.

if i am not mistaken the main difference is where the flash goes and its intended purpose...the flash hider actually is meant to send the gases and muzzle flash away from the shooters eyes while looking downrange. that way you dont blind yourself every shot. whereas a muzzle brake is designed to reduce overall recoil by sending the gases backwards to counteract the recoil. as far as the differences by just looking at them...i cannot say.

            The Muzzle Brake
A muzzle brake is a device attached to the end of a rifle barrel (or cannon, or pistol etc.) in which small cuts or slots are contained. The main purpose of these openings is to reduce recoil and muzzle rise by diverting the gases expelled out of the end of the barrel during firing. The propellant gases that normally would exit the end of the barrel are diverted out of the side and top holes, therefore reducing the forces that cause recoil via backward and upward thrust.

            The Flash Hider
Also known as a flash suppressor, the flash hider is a device attached to the end of a barrel that is used to hide the flash signature of the burning gases expelled out of the barrel during firing. This is especially effective when firing at night or in dim light. The flash-suppressor helps a soldier firing at night escape detection by the enemy. The basic hider designs are described as a prong, a cone or a birdcage.

            Differences
The designs and purposes of each are entirely different. A muzzle brake is very useful when dampening of recoil is needed such as when firing an extremely powerful round. It finds its niche where powerful rounds are needed, such as in long-distance target matches and in the hunting fields. It would be a bad choice to use at night because it has a tremendous muzzle blast and shoots out bright burning gases in every direction.

The flash hider reduces the flame that results when a round is fired. The military uses this for obvious reasons. It is also used by law-enforcement for certain purposes. The flash suppressor is highly desirable to a sniper, as it is difficult for the enemy to determine his position.

            Drawbacks of Each
The muzzle brake has an extremely loud report and with larger firearms, such as the .50-caliber rifle, a concussive effect that can be quite unsettling. In fact, hearing protection is a must because the reports can be loud enough to cause permanent loss of hearing. Some find using hearing protection in the field to be awkward and it can affect outcomes in a negative way because it is difficult to hear anything. One hunter reported that without protection he shot a .30-.30-caliber pistol that had a muzzle brake on it. The tremendous blast caused immediate pain to his ears and he fell to his knees. He said there was a ringing sound in his ears for a week. And in dim light the muzzle flash shot out a flame nearly two feet long.

The flash hider does not reduce recoil or muzzle rise. It does not dampen the report of a round being fired. Also, in many countries it is against the law to have a flash hider attached to a firearm. The United States has many confusing laws and rules related to the device, but basically it is against the law for any civilian to have one. The hider has few if any uses in target shooting or hunting, as targets and animals do not shoot back.
Also, a muzzle brake is almost closed on the end, with an opening just large enough for the bullet to pass through. A flash hider is open.

The 10/22 is one of those guns that every gun guy should have. I still need to get out and get one when I have some extra cash. I love how upgradeable they are! It's like the AR-15 of .22's.

Yes, join the ranks of the mini owners

They may not look as fancy or shoot as accurately as an AR rifle, but drag that baby through a swamp and you can pick it up and still fire it. No denying they are built off a very proven design. Now someone just needs to make an M1 garand conversion kit for them with stripper clips and all...
