This is First Selectman Michael Tetreau with an update from the Fairfield Emergency Operations Center as of 2pm, Saturday.
Hurricane Sandy is a very significant storm. I have declared a state of emergency in the Town of Fairfield. All residents should be prepared for a loss of power for an extended period of time. United Illuminating is projecting 50 to 70% of their customers will lose power.
We are expecting tropical storm winds and some flooding by 11pm Sunday, Tropical Storm Irene level flooding by 11am Monday and extreme high tide with more, flooding exceeding the 1938 Hurricane, by midnight Monday.
For residents of the beach area, we are asking for a voluntary evacuation starting Sunday morning with MANDATORY EVACUATION beginning Sunday at noon. We need to complete evacuations before nightfall when wind and rain begin to strengthen. Be prepared to stay away from the area for several days. Residents on these evacuation zones will receive a separate CodeRed message.
The emergency shelter at Ludlowe High School will open at 12 noon on Sunday for people and pets.
Our next update will come at 2pm on Sunday afternoon. For more information, call 203-254-4899.
Thank you and stay safe.

fairly close to where the storm is right now. I've been watching this for a couple hours and the surge continues to creep closer and closer to the buildings.
Also should mention that low tide there is in about an hour!
