QUESTION: If you were to build a fast AWD or 4WD car for under $5000, what would you buy and what would you do to it?

    RULES:
    1) Has to be street legal and purchasable in the U.S.
    2) List prices of purchase and parts
    2) You have to be able to prove the car can be purchased for what you say (i.e. no 2012 Lancers for $1300, or turbos for 10 bucks without attached CL add)
    3) Cost of repairs have to be considered (if it doesnt come with tires or an engine, you cant list repairs at 100 bucks)
    4) Realistic timelines (no 4 year builds), time estimates for upgrades don't need to be included but could be interesting info
    5) HAS TO BE AWESOME

late 90s, early 2000s Subaru Impreza.

I dunno...turbo and tune...whatever those kind of people do to those kind of cars for under 5k. Tires?

Are you looking to Rally or something, Reid?

I like the older cars like this. There were some neat ones.
Other than that, I would probably do an earlier impreza with a late model 2.2, or 2.5 turbo. STI suspension and wheels, and be done.

I am thinking of getting rid of my Vanagon and getting something for DD/ winter driving/ going fast.

When I don't wheel enough, the need for speed bug starts to take hold.

I got my ass handed to me in my SRT by one of these. It was AWD, and i could hear the turbo. Obviously had a lot more than 5K into it, but they have massive potential.

Early 90s awd prelude some even had 4 wheel steering. Good looking, vtec, still commonenough to getparts for and rare enough to be cool. Otherwise I'd wait a bit and get one of those Suzuki kizashi's they're a sweet car and I'm sure within a few years there will be stuff for em

you're totally right, there was an import that was awd in the early 90s but it definetely was NOT a prelude. Haha guess I need to study my imports a little more before shooting my mouth off.
