QUESTION: If you were to build a fast AWD or 4WD car for under $5000, what would you buy and what would you do to it?

RULES:
1) Has to be street legal and purchasable in the U.S. CHECK
2) List prices of purchase and parts CHECK
2) You have to be able to prove the car can be purchased for what you say (i.e. no 2012 Lancers for $1300, or turbos for 10 bucks without attached CL add) CHECK
3) Cost of repairs have to be considered (if it doesnt come with tires or an engine, you cant list repairs at 100 bucks) Escort never needs repairs.
4) Realistic timelines (no 4 year builds), time estimates for upgrades don't need to be included but could be interesting info. CHECK Build Already done
5) HAS TO BE AWESOME. i dont feel like I even need to answer this one.

Eclipse GSX: AWD model equipped with a turbocharged 2.0 L 16-valve DOHC engine... Mods would be larger turbo, bottom end work to eliminate the crank walk issue, small shot of NO2, stiffer suspension strut braces and swaybars... Exhaust intake, etc.

This is what i wanna get. It's possible to get a bugeye wrx for a little over 5g's but will need work. They are around 6-7k. Any older ones are non turbo unless they are swapped... if you want cheaper then eclipse/talon or galant vr4. They suck though, never idle, crank walk. I have heard bad things about the 2.5's, are the 2.2's better or not worth it?

too bad I can't turn my Vanagon into a Syncro for under 5K. I could drop a Subaru engine into it for that, but to modify to 4wd is darn near impossible for the one I have.

The 2.2's are amazing. The non turbo 2.5's have head gasket issues but the turbo 2.5's and 2.0's are good. The 2.2t is only in the legacy ss, the 2.0t is only in the 02-05 wrx and the 2.5 is in 04+ sti and 06+ wrx. Also the forester xt's were turbo. Thats it for the american market though
