Front speakers more than likely have to do with the contacts that signal the door is closed. Newer xjs came with a fancy shmancy speaker kill that turns them off when you open the door. But it breaks a lot

That fancy thing is the speaker wire grounding out on the door. My driver door speaker would only work with the door opened, found a bare wire rubbing on the inside of the door. Spliced in a new section of wire and it has been fine since.
