If it is just a commuter buy a $1000 1990something toyota corrola or honda accord get over 30mpg. they use 14" tires you can get a while set for $200
A VTEC can be fun to drive. then build a transaxle buggy when you are done.
I could buy a big piece of shit that i always have to question if its gonna make it to work or not and no they arnt fun to drive. And i will also build a buggy even though i cant find time to work on a jeep i currently own.

What the hell is wrong with you? Wanting to get a new, reliable, fun car to get to and from your job that pays the bill? Why not spend most of that money on a buggy/non-dd jeep that will do the opposite of making you money instead and buy a peice of shit that you'll hate driving every day and be white knuckled everytime you drive?! Pfft, I see where your priorities are, trader.

haha i know man. my interests have changed, and i can only have so many toys.

to be honest I ride my Harley and dirtbike more then i ever messed with my jeep... and have way more fun on them. If i wanna go in the woods i take the bike and i go fast, do wheelies and jump stuff, and i have LEGAL access to over 60 miles of trails right here in CT.

Right now I just want a jeep to take on camping trips, drive around on the road and maybe some light wheeling to get a good place to have a fire.

I hear ya 100%. All my friends gave me so much shit for trading in the jeep for this truck, but I wanted a nice new vehicle that I didn't have to worry about anything with, and I needed a truck for work. I hardly even worked this truck and in the last two weeks made a couple grand on the side.

I haven't gone off road in a couple years, wasn't practical for me to have another toy that I didn't use. And as much as I say I hate VW's, I just hate working on them, I love driving my wife's golf, it's a fun little zippy car that get's good MPG's and I love their look.

            Good luck man!
