my friend hates himself for selling his spec B.

shopping around for a used spec B with 67k miles costs as mush as a brand new gti (just about)

Subaru's are good easy to work on AWD not the best MPG good all around.

VW TDI you cannot bet the millage and they last forever we have some over 300k at work and they still worth big $$ with 200k on them. Good luck finding a used one they are hard to find.
VW are pretty reliable you just need a good mechanic that knows his stuff. And a good parts guy. Autozone, Napa etc. parts suck for VW and Audi need OEM stuff you can get them from CPI, World Pac, places like that which isn't readily available to the public.

SAAB have good power and reliable, also easy to work on but you need a good parts guy too.

Sorry I work on mostly foreign cars.
What about an Ecotec car, 4cly GM cars?

I just tell people all cars break just buy what you like because if you are happy with the car you don't mind as much spending money on it.

I would suggest a 1990 early 2000 car just easier to work on the new cars all drive by wire and digital stuff just suck for diagnosis.
Just buy a cheap car you cannot have a $5000 problem in a $1200 car.
Plus little commuter cars have smaller tires and all the other parts are cheaper.

Just don't buy a common car easier to get parts and tech support.

You have a lot of options you didn't really define what you are looking for.

There are a few decent TDI's on craigslist that I've seen, those are the only VW I would buy.

iF you are looking for mileage, can't beat a TDI....but volkswagens still make me cringe for some reason. I like them, but i hate them at the same time. Also, I really like the new Subaru BRZ. quick little car and is supposed to get high 20s for MPGs. I think they are around 25 grand also which isn't bad

97 TJ that I think is pretty neat.

Are you not into the TDI Wagon? I hear they are a fun little wagon to drive around. Friend sold her X3 for one and loves it

                  i drove one, its cool and all but the gti is obviously more fun;

                  some stats:
GTI combined 25mpg (fueleconomy.gov) driving 400 miles per week at $3.9 per gallon of gas gets me $2995.2 cost of fuel for the year

TDI combined 34mpg (fueleconomy.gov) driving 400 miles per week at $4.1 per gallon of diesel gets me $2315.2 cost of fuel for the year

so $680 of savings of fuel that year. BUT VW has a 0% financing on GAS ONLY vehicles right now, so that right there just just killed that advantage.

sooooo...... i think im gonna buy a GTI

Good stuff I have been wanting a GTI forever and really fell in love with the looks of the MK6 when they came out. Damn wife for some reason hates hatchbacks though

so you are going to buy new?

If it is just a commuter buy a $1000 1990something toyota corrola or honda accord get over 30mpg. they use 14" tires you can get a while set for $200
A VTEC can be fun to drive. then build a transaxle buggy when you are done.

Tdi and convert it to run on Bio diesel. Those are cool and get 50mpg's
