After finishing dinner in Mammoth, WY we decided to check out the hot springs.

I spent 10 days at the end of May training there, but never got a chance to walk around the hot springs.

I left Canyon Village, WY around 400pm on July 25th with the goal of hiking the Mount Washburn Spur Trail in reverse.
Which means starting at the Dunraven Pass (elevation 8,859) trailhead.
Summiting Mount Washburn (elevation 10,243) at the 3.2 mile mark.
Finishing at the Glacial Boulder (elevation 7,900) trailhead.

I already summited Mount Washburn on July 11th and did that write up so I'm going to start this write up at the 3 mile mark of the hike.

The Mount Washburn trailhead is only 5 miles north of Canyon Village.
Left my friend Sara and Alex's car at the Glacial Boulder trailhead which is 1.5 miles south of Canyon Village.

The hike is 11.5 miles long. Left around 430pm.

The 3 mile mark. Almost to the top.

A few hundred feet from the top.

50 feet from the top. Good shot of the summit building.

                  The summit building.
It only took us 1 hr and 15 minutes to hike the 3.2 mile trail.
It took 2 hours to summit on July 11th.

The start of the Mount Washburn Spur Trail taken from the upper observation deck.

Taken from outside the summit building.

Sara and Alex at the summit. From Jerz.

Alex, Sara and me at the summit.

The summit. We only spent 15 minutes on top and were on our way again a few minutes after 600pm.

                    • Found this marker on the summit. Did not see it there last time.

A hundred feet from the top..... heading down. Electric Peak and Bunsen Peak are visible if you know where to look.

3.5 miles down. 8 miles to go. Used these next 2 pictures from my July 11th trip because the July 24th pictures of this sign came out like crap.

The trail was narrow and steep. The going was slow.....

First picture looking south. Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and Yellowstone Lake visible.
                        Second picture looking north.

Coming up the other side. A little snow still up there.

4.5 miles down. 7 miles to go. Still above the treeline.

                        • A meadow that we definitely hike through later on, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and Hayden Valley in the upper right portion of the picture.

Noticeably less light. A trend that continues the rest of the hike.

5.5 miles down. 6 miles to go. Back into the trees.

                          A steep meadow.

                          • In bear country and it really felt like it. From the 6 mile mark to the 9 mile mark we saw a lot of bear tracks. Some of them fresh.

6.5 miles down. 5 miles to go. The trail opened up into the large meadow we saw 2 or 3 miles ago.

The sun very low as well.....

Mount Washburn from the meadow. 2,000+ feet in elevation higher than the meadow.

Sara and Alex in the mile long meadow.

Our last view of Washburn for the day.

Washburn Hot Springs. This was the first time in 3.5 miles that we actually had verification of how far into the hike we were.

Washburn Hot Springs. There are 4 different types of thermal features. Hot Springs, mudpots, steam vents and geysers.

These are hot springs, mudpots and steam vents.

                              • 8 miles down. 3.5 to go. Another meadow where we saw some elk and deer.

8.5 miles down. 3 to go. The "Seven Mile Hole" trail intersection.
It was starting to get dark, but there was still some light left.

10 miles down. 1.5 to go. We were a little nervous when we got to this spot.
I thought I had read the "Seven Mile Hole" trail intersection meant 2 miles to go when in fact it meant 3 miles to go. There was still a little light left.

10.5 miles down. 1 to go. The Silver Cord Cascade overlook.
The last mile it was pitch black.
Here is what you would normally see versus what we saw.

                                http://cascadeclimbers.com/plab/data...rd_cascade.jpg

We started hiking from the Dunraven Pass trailhead at 430pm from my jeep and made it back to Sara and Alex's car at the Glacial Boulder trailhead at 1000pm.

We experienced a 1,400 foot elevation gain followed by a 2,350 foot elevation loss.

It took us 5.5 hours to hike the 11.5 miles.

Note to self..... always bring your headlamp.
