for the sake of this thread and at the risk of becoming further involved:

the situation i was told at the time is that dizzy borrowed the jeep with the understanding that it would be fixed if broken afterwards if he were to borrow it to wheel

        I agree, Andy.

When one lends a purpose built object to be used for said purpose, and is used correctly, you can't get upset when the normal outcome for said purpose occurs.

        If that makes any sense.

To relat back to the welder analogy, if my buddy borrowed the welder and when I got it back I had to replace the tip or the spool, would i send him a bill?

        Of course it's all a matter of scale, an $2 tip -> $800 welder like a $400 driveshaft -> $5-6k rig.

(i dont even know who the owner was at that point in time, bummer or timmay?)
          bummer.

some dents? a dented rim? meh thats what its for. nbd

shattered DS and crushed front quarter?

the understanding was take it, use it; if ya break it fix it.

I would consider a bent up fender a common problem on a rig with a large tire. But thats just me

Edit: Unless this all happend on a blue trail, but im guessing it was more like a black/red where body damage is likely

              of course..

if someone borrowed my jeep and broke a side marker lens, would i bill him? of course not, thats just a small thing and we are friends so whatever.

if someone borrowed my jeep and yardsaled it being a jackass, of course id want compensation for their actions

and it would be even more clear cut of an issue if said buddy agreed in advance he would either not damage it, or would repair any damage he did to it

I took Smileys rig out a few times and didn't bring it back destroyed. By your logic, I should have?

                Riddle me that one

Totally Agreed, but I don't think Dizzler said, "I think I'll fuck this thing up." The obstacle that fucked the body was hard yes, but accidents happen, he didnt flop it to show off.

Crawl Daddy did involve some showboating but the co-loaner of the vehicle was their and if Tim didn't think his bro wanted the thing beat on it should have been cleared up.

Either way, if i borrowed your rig Will and unintentionally damaged it, i would feel obligated to aid in reparations, but financially would probably be unable to.

"if you break it, you fix it" is about as clear cut as anything gets. breaking shafts or parts is a common problem off roading in general with any rig, but if i told someone they can use my rig for a weekend while i wasnt even there, and they need to fix what they broke..i'd hope the fact that breaking being a "common problem" wouldnt be considered a get out of jail free card

where the fuck does this logic come from? does no one have personal responsibility anymore? deke loaned dizzy his personal vehicle for a weekend of fun, and people want to tell him to just get fucked because its "common" or "expected" to break someones things?

                      get real people...

I would have replaced that drives shaft right when it happened. that would have put me into a hissy fit.

the body damage is something i would think is a possability when the rig is built up to that point. i would have banged the fender out, fiber glassed the front and said if you come across something for a good deal pick it up, and gimme a hand making it look good. a few beers and a steak later, everyones a happy family.

this is why i dont drive ultra4 rigs when i am offered. if i cant afford something, i typically wont do it, unless im going really really easy. too much responsibility involved in expensive toys...thats why i own an xj, haha

a 12 hour window to repay any debt is unreal.

I'm not saying Dizzy should not have to fix or pay to fix the jeep, just that the hostility towards him for doing so is unneeded.

its just like when we've heard the stories about the guys who rent the baja cars at RC and drive them...a few have flipped them and had to pay out of pocket for the costs. not a cheap day!
