  • My 1948 John Deere Model A

I bought this tractor as a birthday present for myself back in December. I kind of need a work horse tractor that is at least 30 PTO hp. Of course everyone knows I like old stuff, so I picked up some old iron. I didn't really think it was appropriate to put in the build threads section but here is a brief overview

    Specs
1948 John Deere "A" Late Styled
    321ci 2 cylinder gasoline engine
    Eletric start
    Factory wide front
    Power Trol Hydraulics
    3 Point hitch

I bought it not running (dice roll)

Here is a start up video I took with my phone.
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/nTImvw1yFtU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>You can see in the discription what I had to do to fire it up.

Next it needs guages, battery box, water pump, carb kit, gas cap and some other ods and ends. Anyone want to see more? Maybe I will make a build thread for it

Maybe eventually, right now I want to get it 100% mechanical so I can work it. And maybe drive to parties at close by neighbors houses.

Thanks, the hood and dash are really good. It didn;t come with a grille or medalion but i bought ones off of ebay for cheap. The medalion I got was great, the grille halves are fair, not bad for 86 bucks for everything shipped.

Shoot, I just got rid of a NICE chrome straight pipe that I had laying around for an A i used to have. A good place to get parts is tractorpart.com I have met the guy at quite a few tractor show's where I bring a few of mine to, he's a local is mass I think.

For any parts that are not remade, about 10 miles from my school in NY is a HUGE tractor scrap yard. The name of the place is mcfaddens and sons

Well, I am ok with the stock muffler for now, thanks though. What year was your A? I am looking at tractorpart.com now, I saw them before, but didn't realize they were close by, prices seem good too, so I'll be using them.

I also have a '58 or '59 Case 310 Backhoe, I would like to find an original working gauge cluster for it when I get it running again. I'll keep that other place in mind, I haven't seen repro guage clusters for it.

Nice rig, tractors are a lot simpler than jeeps and buggies, which I find to be a nice break from 4x4s, and pretty useful if you have some land or work to do. Looks like your cub will be pretty useful.

Thanks, I'll throw up some pics as I go, I just got some repro gauges today and a battery box is on order.

Nice. Nothing else sounds like an old deere. I'm always dealing with old tractors. I have a few tucked away myself.
