The reason why you don't hear about Connecticut is because this state generally swings Democratic in almost every race, so it's an instant win blue state. Hartford, Bridgeport and New Haven are mainly to blame for this.

States like New Hampshire and Iowa are all you hear about in the news this early in the election process because they have the highest percentage of undecided voters in the country.

you need to be registered with a party in order to vote in that party's primary in your state. then the candidates go to convention and delegates (delegates are like the electoral college, they are supposed to vote for the person that won the majority in the state they represent) cast votes in order to choose what person will run for their party. then you finally have yourself a presidential race.
