What about something like this?
The only problem is the gopro hitting something.

Will,
I'm not a fan of that original mount at all. I think I can come up with something much better using tube and heims.
I'd have three legs, all bases would attach with vise grip style clamps. Two of the legs would be telescopic with set screws (with a large T handle).
Then you'd effectively be able to mount it on anything with three accessible tubes with no tools AND, if it does happen to be in the shot, it'll "fit the part" a whole lot better than a ratchet strap or cable.
Thoughts? Should I just build it?

Then to your clamp. It will have swing give but up you can tighten it to limit up down travel.

tool-less operation is so clutch, it seems incidental but in reality in the field it is crucial
also the fact the mount ends dont need a "full wrap" on the tube of the vehicle is another major upside...panels and dashes and wiring and lines and all that stuff all too often gets in the way. we are lucky our gopro mounts use zipties and can get around that more often than not, but a tube clamp would be severely limited. this is another reason i dont use gopros supplied roll bar mounts, theyre full wrap and are too cumbersome to mount in a lot of places, and theyre even small- Will
