  • Gixxers...

I've seen quite a few of you guys talk about riding. I had a CBR600F4i last season, put about 10,000mi. on it over the summer. Looking to buy a gixxer 600 or 750 this year. Did some research on gixxer.com and they all seem to be warning newer riders not to get them. I've ridden one before and it didnt seem like death....but just figured i'd check in w/ you guys and see if anyone owns or has ridden one and what they think?

I bought a GSXR1000 new in 2002. It was a monster. More bike than I needed and was uncomfortable due to my bad wrists. I should have bought a Busa. I had a 1995 GSXR750
prior to that and it was a great bike and very comfortable. I dropped a tooth in the front and it was very snappy.

The issue with them is that if your new to riding and you panic, you can snap your wrist and the bike has enough power to really hurt you. If I roll the throttle on my shadow 750 it just peps up, its not going to take off like a rocket.

I would trust myself to start on one, but in my MSF class right now, there are people who can't even control a 250.

If you've put 10k miles on a 600 i wouldn't worry about going to a gsxr 600-750. 1000's are where shit hits the fan, the main problem is newer riders thinking they wan't something with the thrust of a space ship, buy a 1000 and end up killing themselves.

1000s are ridiculous, way to much power for a normal person riding on the street. Ill stick to my 87 Honda Rebel 450, it gets me where I need to go and gets 56 mpgs. In the future id like to upgrade to an R6 though or a 600cc or so dual sport.

He was riding with out a helmet correct? and hit sand or something? right? Looks like it hurt a little. I said in the future for a reason, Id like to get more riding experience before I own a sport bike.

yeah he's a fuckin idiot for not wearing a helmet.
He got cut off a few days before his accident and dumped the bike. He was fine but he snapped off the front brake lever.

One day he woke up early for work and decided he was going to take a quick spin around the neighborhood. He went into a corner a little took hot and hit the back brake because the front one wasn't there. He hit a sand bank and put the key through his lip. Broke the bones in the left side of his face. Ended up riding the bike back to his house pouring blood everywhere. Several surgeries later and some titanium his face is back to normal, well at least as normal as that kid's face can get.

if i ever get a strictly street bike it would be an fz6. basically the r6, but more comfortable and tuned for a little more tork and less top end. that or a katana.

anything more is just for bragging rights

Thats what i was thinking more responses would be, the honda wheelied pretty easily so i really didnt think there would be too much of a difference. Thanks for the thoughts guys.

                            Ok, ready?

First off the amount of miles you put on your bike doesn't mean anything about your riding ability. If you've been riding incorrectly for the last 10k miles a newer bike isn't going to fix that. A 1000 is a lot of bike and the GSXR 1000 is the #2 death bike.

Any good rider on a 600 can keep up with a 1000 especially in the twisties since they are lighter and corner better. My buddy and I were taking corners today and I was right behind him on my 636 and he has an R1. Its all about the rider, not the bike. My 636 will scare the crap out of me if I want it too, pull the front tire in 1st and 2nd gear and do 120 in 2nd. If you need more bike then that on the street you don't belong on the street IMO.

Keep this in mind- If you ride like there is no tomorrow, there isn't going to be one. Pick up some books on riding like "Total Control", "A twist of the Wrist" and "Proficient Motorcycling". They will definitely improve your riding ability.

Hes not looking to get a 1000. He's looking to go to another 600 or maybe a 750, if he really does suck at riding hes going to kill himself one day anyways.

From the description you gave you might end up killing YOURself one day.
