Now I realize that this is an off-road club, but why on earth does the vast majority of wheelers and dealers on here own XJ's? I mean I know the reasons I own one (decent mileage, the 4.0, one of the best and cheapest 4x4's out available, looks, heritage, capability...etc). What is so special about the XJ in particular around here. Is it really a universal feeling of sheer utilitarian purpose, or is it something else entirely? Im sure everyone has their own reasons, and Im also aware that there are a quite a few members who have TJ's and other such rigs so forum....flame away!!

Cheap compared to a TJ, cheap parts, availibility, and the YJ sucks.

In fact, they are so cheap, I got mine for free.

You don't need to assume you're going to get flamed just for posting. We're not all that bad here. And your question wasn't stupid.

solid front and rear axles, proven drivetrain, relatively small (they fit down tight new england trails), go wheeling with 3 other people and still have room for lots of cargo.

The coil front and leaf rear is a great suspension platform, it's stable and simple.

and like phil said, they are the most affordable. For around $8k you can have a badass xj geared, locked, longarmed, on 35's that can really hold its own out on the trail.

                        That's why i liked mine.
No worries, I'm not actually back, I'm just reminiscing about the old days.

i litterally love everything about the XJ. interior, exterior, drivedrain, cheap to maintain. it was the first real SUV and to this day is still be best IMO.

not sure why jeep ever dropped it for the liberty though

one thing has always been on my mind though.. does anyone know why they never swaped the "XJ" with the 96-97 crossover? the seemed to have done that with every other jeep
