True phil, unfortunately groups like sis make up a small portion of a sport whose overall respectability
has been vandalized by people with "big trucks" who have been trespassing, littering and destroying private land and public wilderness for decades. REI and other corporations arent going by the small concerted efforts of clubto protect ohv access, they're basing their stance on the ignorant who just put big tires on their vehicles to wreck the woods.

I love offroading, and I love backpacking andhiking so I feel both should be a protected interest, but I wont fault a company for trying to protect the wilderness left in our country.

Normally I'd agree with your post, however it isnt about SiS being a minority. There are huge organizations such as BRC and the many "Friends of _____" groups and beyond that promote and practice responsible off road riding, raise money, do clean ups, so on. I'd go as far as to say the majority of 4x4 OHV users are not destructive, and theres a small portion that make a bad name for everyone (confed flag agriculture tire'd beer drinkin open headered 10" lift blocks so on).

Ignorance of the facts or apathy for them is no excuse to take a stance against a community. Companies such as REI should have a positive stance for OHV users just as much as they do for "human powered" activity like hiking and biking. All of these people empower their company and money flow as there are MANY cross overs from each.

REI supporting positive access groups such as BRC would be a logical thing, versus taking a stand against them, which is ignorant and narrow sighted. If REI wishes to maintain the wilderness on our earth, then realizing positive access groups are something to support, as they benefit the greater picture as with any environmental organization. Not supporting OHV organizations will not stop rednecks from tearing up land.

The matter comes down to the fact of who gets what land for what purpose.

REI is gonna fight to keep it for their consumer base, hikers and cyclists.

Offroad organizations are gonna fight to keep ohv land.

Im not trying to say REI isn't culpable for there choice, but they're trying to make their money spenders happy.

In the end its just a piece of marketing for the store to seem more earth friendly, which blows because if they truly saw the correlation between hiking ad ohv activities they would notice the segment is heavily intertwined. Im not trying to justify REI but I can see the financial and bureaucratic reasons why they would.
