  • Steering Q's

So, OER kicked the Thing's butt, but I fixed most everything within a day. The one thing left is: When driving straight, my wheel is cocked almost 45 degrees to the left. Steering doesn't appear to be bent, the link from the wheel to the steering box isn't twisted, and it didn't spin on the splines where it links to the steering box. Anyone know what I should look for? TRE's appear to be fine.

That's what I thought, and you are correct, it did do this right after I lifted it. I adjusted it to compensate for the lift within a few days of doing that last April, though.

My alignment appears to be fine after replacing the wheel bearing on the right... maybe I just bent something a little bit, but how would a small bend end up with a 45 degree rotation of the wheel?

The ultimate solution here is that I need to go won-ton, but that's out of the budget for right now.

Does the alignment appear to be fine or did you measure it?
How about the steering box, still bolted in good?

I measured it with a tape from wheel lip to wheel lip, it was okay.

Steering box isn't loose, bolts are still torqued town to spec.

Could I have started to do something like Corey and rip the mounts off the box?

My wee little bend in mah drag link turned my wheel a full 180 so i would look for a bend.

just adjust the drag link til its straight.

something bent, but its obviously not a big issue. it happens to every front end if ya hit something the wrong way

Drag link's been adjusted enough to make it work for now, but I needs to upgrade steering. Any recommendations on what to go with? DubJay would be nice, but is out of the budget at this time. I saw the Rugged Ridge inverted-T setup, but I've heard mixed reviews on it.

JCR is good stuff. Don't bother with rugged ridge. Or just find a new stock draglink for cheap and get a beefy tierod from somewhere.

I've heard only good things about JCR. V8 ZJ drag link?

Not sure if the ZJ V8 drag link is different than the stock cherokee one, but I know the tierod is stronger.

Drag link is the same IIRC.

It's only a upgrade for the newer models.
