I went wheeling on sat with a kid I know with a crazy XJ set up for serious rockcrawling. He has 37" tires, full widths, locked front and rear, and rear coil spring set up. We went to a place that is ALL flexing and crawling up ledges and rocks, and before we went, he said if I made it up the hill to the trail, he'd be surprised, being I am unlocked and had thornbirds. I not only made it up to the trail, but made it completely through the trail with basically no problems. I climbed a few pretty nast rocks, and it was wet out and the trail was still partly snow covered. The thornbirds worked flawlessly, digging me out of trenches and pulling me up slippery rock ledges with basically no effort. I had them aired down to about 20PSI, and I have to say, I wasn't expecting them to do that great myself but I am impressed. I went over and through stuff that I would have never even though about before!
I only came out with a few new scratches and a broken drivers side mirror. Overall, a good day! Haha. I have to say, despite what everyone says about the thornbirds, they did do very well, and the kid I went with was extremely amazed I was able to follow him. I'm not saying there the best tires ever, but for what I paid for them, they do the job.
We also lost a fellow XJ along the way, lol, a buddy of mines. He has 35's, longarms, and 8 inches of lift. Going up a rock ledge I had just climbed, he snapped his rear axle spider gear in half. Then trying to get out of the trail in front wheel drive, he broke a front U-joint, and we had to tow him out, haha.
I'll try to get some pics up of the place we went to. There only cell phone pics, but they'll work. It's a private place owned by a guy that the kid with the rock crawler XJ knows, but it was an awesome time. It's nice to get away from mud for once, and now I am really looking forward to doing mabell with you guys!
