  • Muffler for 2.5L

ok, so i realize that to some, adding an aftermarket muffler to a 4 banger is a waste of money. I would like my jeep to sound better (deeper, meaner, etc.). anyone have any experience will a 2.5l and have a suggestion to what type i should be looking for. I like the sound of the flowmaster 40.

i think the 4.0 sounds like shit no matter what pipe comes out of the head.

    loud and cheap = glasspack
fair price, fair noise = flowmaster
a tad bit louder than stock = dynomax
best sound, highest price = magnaflow

classic chamberd muffers are my favorite for everything. (aka "power sticks")

straight through chamberd style just like whats in 60s vette sidepipes.

I know somebody who has a Flowmaster 10 race muffler behind their 2.5 YJ. Sounds badass, but IIRC the Flowmaster 10 isnt quite "street legal" but you'd be hard pressed to find a cop/inspection station that knows that. It is VERY loud though though he said his falls just under the legal sound limit with everything else being stock.

From what i've noticed from the 3 different aftermarket exhausts I've run on my Jeep the next biggest thing you can do to make it sound better besides the muffler is a higher diameter tailipe, the Rusty's one I have made almost as big of a difference as the flowmaster 40 I put on it.

very little aftermarket parts for your exhaust are "street legal"

pretty much comes down to if a cop is havin a bad day an wants to give you a ticket or not.

o an cherry bomb "extreme" is very similar to a 10 series just cheeper.

whatever you do, do not throw anything like a flowmaster 40 on it. Mine sounds like a honda and i hate it. if i were you, i would look for a turbo style muffler like a cherry bomb turbo or thrush turbo. something a little quieter but would still give it good sound (like the dynomax adam said). I heard glasspacks make them sound ricerish too.

97 TJ that I think is pretty neat.

i would deff have to agree with you on this. i am not a fan of flowmasters at all.

also tubing size will play a big role, something like a 2"-2.25" will sound like bumble bee honda garbage. an bigger tubing like a 3" will sound deep an less hondaish.

i never heard the power stick muffler i was talkin about on a 4 banger but on everything else i have heard they sound very good. they are somewhat like a flow master but dont have the rasp an sound more smooth i gess you could say.

Pedro had a cherry bomb turbo on his 4.0 and it sounded awesome. def louder than stock but not obnoxious and it gave it a nice deep tone. but thats on a 4.0.

I ran a thrush turbo, sounded awful and resonated like crazy.
