Just picked up a 98 XJ that needs a 242 case... I have a 242 but it has the old tailshaft style Can i simply just swap tailshafts?

I just mutted an new 242 with an old 242.
The switch is in a different spot the new one has the switch on the shifter cam next to the planetary the old style has it on the output housing next to the speedo.

The main shaft is also different, the output bearing and c-clip grove are in different spots.

There are some other difference like the front drive output is 2 piece put that doesn't matter, and the shifter came is different for the shift light.

your biggest problem is the rear output shaft is different every thing else works just the light switch wont work.

the 1990 case is 21 spline and the others 23 spline

                thats the biggest hurdle there
