low boost EJ255T or EJ20T or VW TDI.

the TDI will struggle to push the jeep on the highway i would think though.

a duramax would be sweet, but i would think that if youre doing it solely to save money on fuel, after the cost of the swap is factored in you'd break even by about 2035 ..... wrecked duramax trucks still fetch between 12-18k depending on condition... they're almost impossible to find, but a Nissan SD33T would be a good swap.. low power low boost, decent mpg's, and theyre all mechanical so theres not a metric fuckton of wiring to be done...

If gas is the issue, then this.

That is an OBD2 car I would try to figure out the emission stuff before you even think about swapping an engine.

Thr TDI is a near impossibility, I checked into doing this on my dads sammi, in order to trick thr VW engine into running you need EVERY sensor off the car, all the computer components, the vw gauges, even the VW ignition cylinder cuz that engine won't run without a VW encoded key

Try this site for diesel VW conversion not a large diesel engine.
                            http://www.acmeadapters.com/store_engine.php

The VW will mate up to the "Jeep AX5, Suzuki AG5, Toyota G52, G58, W55, W56, W57 and W58 5-speeds all share a common face pattern on the case (Small pattern)."

Just let me know when your come on a trail ride and I'll make sure to skip that one.
I don't know who likes the diesel smell enough to sit behind one all day on the trail.

Why do you want a diesel anyways?
I think gas engine is the best way to go for rock crawling they rev so much higher.

there is a guy on cherokeeforum who keeps talking about "kits" to stick vw tdi's into cherokees. search ova thurr

i think its a silly idea. and you will never make your time/effort/money back.

and that engine in a vdub will get much better milage than that engine in a jk
