you need a laptop running Eaton MD300 or Truckease, a Nexiq Pro-Link, or a Cummins scanner from the dealer... semis don't use OBD2, they have either a 5-pin or 9-pin round scantool connector, depending on the year... an '02 will use the j1939 connector, which is the 9-pin...

is that stuff really expensive? and what exactly does it all do?

oh and you seem like you might know what you are talking about.
are you familiar with Cummins ISX engines and disconnecting the EGR in them to get better MPG?

yeah theyre pretty pricey.... Eaton MD300 and Truckease (about 1k before you add any of the manufacturer programs) can be run on any laptop, but theyre both basically just a code scanner unless you spend the big bucks and buy the manufacturer add-ons to the basic program.... with the manufacturer bundles you can do just about anything.... reprogram max and cruise top speeds, do real time tests on the ABS systems, check all systems while the engine is running and cut fuel to the cylinders one by one to check for bad injectors, among other things... the Nexiq (the one we have at work now) is about $4500, but well worth it... out of the box it does everything that MD300or Truckease with all the add-ons can do... i'm sure there's other ones out there, i believe OTC has a truck scanner as well, but those are the ones i know and have used...

Yea, thats the problem. Im trying to figure this out for my dad. He is having problems with is 04 International 9400i.
My dad is so old school its not even funny, he is not use to all these electronics in trucks now. In his words "I should just sell this modern piece of shit and go back to a good old non electronics trucks"
He is having problems with truck though when he pulls real hard he says it feels like its missing but only below 1400 rpms or something... the fault he is getting in the truck says 84, I looked up all the faults and there is nothing below 111 for the 02 and up ISX engines. He said maybe the EGR, so I was seeing where you can bypass the EGR and trick the electronics into not thinking it is there which is also giving them better MPG.

thanks! im a diesel tech, about 7 years on the job plus some schooling... never done that, but i think removing it will probably not get you that much of an increase in MPG's, plus it'd be a headache to do.... it's not like removing the valve from a car and throwing on a blockoff plate.... the isx and ism motors use a liquid cooled egr system (coolant goes right through the valve and there's a couple of metal coolant lines connected to it), and the egr valve is actually part of the exhaust manifold.... it's bolted on to the end of it with a round flex joint.. and i also believe that unless you reprogram the computer with an older non-egr operating system, the computer will sense that something is wrong with the system and derate the engine (like limp mode in a car)....

I read this on Truck forum. This is what it said to do...
Turn the key on(but dont turn on the truck) wait 10 seconds. Just unplug the EGR connector and then turn over the truck and it will trick the engine to thinking the EGR is not there. Have to do it when the engine is cool. A bunch of guys were reporting plus 1 mpg( when you drive 2000 miles a day that is a huge gain)
does that not make sense to you? you think that would mess up the computer? He was going to try it, but I dont want him to jack something up.
I didnt mean to fully remove the EGR system, just disconnect it.

hmmm.... never heard of that... i don't think it'd hurt anything, most likely the worst that will happen is the check engine light would come on.... egr problems wont trigger the automatic shutdown....
