  • Tubing tolerances?

does anyone know anything about tubing tolerances? aka how off an I.D. can be in production tube like HREW or DOM?

I need a 2" I.D. tube to become a mounting can for a set of airbumps, the air bumps are 2.0" in diameter...so i am seeing this being a very tight fit without cutting and spreading the tube with a tightening mechanism like a typical mounting can, which i kind of want to avoid (have to)

with that said...does anyone have 2" I.D. tube?

2.5" od x 1/4" wall dom done. dom has always been a perfect fit for me with tubing inserts and whatnot.

doesn't hrew have an inner flash?

i did find out the tolerance can be up to minus .006, so its pretty fucking tight i guess (she said)

      unsure on the HREW

lol, all it comes down to is availability...finding ~2 feet of 2" ID DOM or HREW or whatever i imagine isnt simple

i may ask for scraps on pirate or somewhere...

.25 wall may be too intense, i am lookin to use set screws with this or some other mechanism to keep the bumps from falling out..radflo changed their bump design somehow i heard so i need to see them before i really decide

you should scope out Logans will, the bargain barn = $1 a lb, they have short DOM and HREW sections in there last time i checked, and you wont be able to use HREW, its got the inner seam, unless you gawna use a dremel and grind the inside down

Yes HREW does have an inner flash unlike DOM, and the typical tolerances are usually about double that of an equivalent piece of DOM. So a piece of 2.5 x 1/4 HREW round tubing has an inner/outer diameter tolerance of +/- 0.012" while a piece of 2.5 x 1/4 DOM round tubing has an inner/outer diameter tolerance of +/- 0.006".

Incidentally Will, I probably have some DOM cutoffs of the right size at work. We do a ton of fabrication work on site and are well stocked with tube, pipe, bar, angle, plate, sheet...... I'll rummage through the scrap bin tomorrow. Do you need 0.250" wall or would 0.188" or 0.125" work as well?
