I just got to embry riddle and i'm joining a team to build a eco friendly deisel electrice car, anyone that has any info on how to make diesels more friendly please post up

Make it run on flat, skunked beer.

after all, I hate to see beer go to waste, no matter how bad it is.

well there are different mixtures of biodiesel. most biodiesel isnt straight veggie oil. For example, there is B10 (which is only 10% veggie oil) all the way up to B100, which is 100% veggie oil.

But I have always wanted to have this topic for a research paper. def wish i knew more about it. Most countries use diesel fuel as their primary fuel source and they have much cleaner air than we do. funny how that works. People in europe and stuff figured out how to get 75mpgs out of a 3 cylinder VW diesel. and why do VW TDI diesels, in america, get 55mpgs but we are pushing for 35mpg smart cars that can only haul 2 grocery bags and in infant. Everyone is pushing hydrogen cars too because its so damn clean. well look, when there is only 1 hydrogen fueling station in the state, noone is gonna buy them. Not to mention they only get 150 miles to a tank.

Clean diesel is apparently easy to do. New cummins, duramax, and powerstrokes have to abide by strict emission tests now. They use particulate filters. These are not good for the engines cause it makes them run hot, which hurts the engine. But they are clean. On the new 6.7 cummins, there is not supposed to be any soot on the tailpipe until 50k miles. Seems pretty clean to me, however, it doesnt make the engine as reliable. It's also a 10,000 dollar fine to remove the particulate filter on these trucks. They also made low sulfur diesel fuels which are only 15ppm sulphur rating. This cuts down on particulates as well. Off road diesel is not even available in higher (500ppm) sulphur ratings anymore. The only difference is that it is dyed red instead of on road diesel which is green. Diesel engines rely on sulphur to lubricate fuel components such as injectors and the injector pumps. Thats why older machinery and older diesels (like the 12 valve cummins, 6.9 and 7.3 powerstrokes, 6.5 chevy diesels, etc.) hate the new fuels. People get around it by adding ATF to the fuel of other additives like diesel clean. I heard that they were changing diesel laws again soon. saying that any truck after 1994 will have to have a particulate filter. Honestly i dont see that happening because these older trucks used mechanical fuel systems, especially the 94-98.5 12 valve cummins.

New emissions standards also come with fuel mileage changes. the 08 and up 6.4 powerstokes get 6-10mpg. who the fuck wants a truck that gets that. I dont care that is is bi-turbo. 6.7 cummins and 6.6 duramax trucks get around 20-22mpg. which is good for a full size truck if you ask me. But again, these trucks are running hotter, which makes them less stout.

My point by all of this is that with clean diesel, there are risks. Just cause it's clean, doesnt mean it is reliable and safe. There have def been steps to improve diesel exhaust, but nothing perfect yet. This isnt just for trucks, its for passenger cars. I believe diesel is the future honestly, but im sure there are plenty of people who will disagree.

hope that helps at least a little bit. i kinda went on a rant

id say look into making a six stroke engine. might be able to use some of that extra heat created by the particulate filters to make some power.

            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_stroke_engine

            "Crower six-stroke engine
            Main article: Crower six stroke
In a six-stroke engine developed in the U.S. by Bruce Crower, fresh water is injected into the cylinder after the exhaust stroke, and is quickly turned to superheated steam, which causes the water to expand to 1600 times its volume and forces the piston down for an additional stroke.[9] This design also claims to reduce fuel consumption by 40%. Maximum efficiency would theoretically be obtained by applying the design to a non-turbocharged diesel engine, where the high compression ratio would allow greater expansion of the steam.

The Crower six-stroke engine was invented in 2004 by 75 year old American inventor Bruce Crower who has applied for a patent on a design involving fresh water injection into the cylinders. As of May 2008, no patent has been awarded. [10] ([1]) Leonard Dyer invented the first six-stroke internal combustion water injection engine in 1915, which is very similar to Crower's design. [11] Crower's six-stroke engine features:

            No cooling system required
Improves a typical engine’s fuel consumption
Requires a supply of distilled water to act as the medium for the second power stroke"

ya the dpf suck for the motor becuse of the heat factor but it acually doesnt heat it up as much as people think and also so do the egr on the new trucks which is even worse than the dpf because of the fact that you are putting dirty exaust back into the motor which is the reason cat was using acret for while which held the intake valve open for longer when the motor started to run hot but that did not meet the new emisions

holy shit kappy use punctuation. :rofl

but what was happening to the DPFs was that they require that the truck be drivin 50 miles at highway speeds EACH DAY in order to get it hot enough that it will cycle and burn everything off inside of it. So, obviously, people were not doing that. The DPFs clog up an the engine cant breathe.

ya but i no like on the newer fords that they will go into manual regen to clean them out so that dosn't happen

is that on the newest ones? cause i know the cummins engines were having trouble with this and i heard they were doing something similar

but im waiting for the new 6.7 ford motor fords first diesel produced by them its has 750 lbs-ft of torque at 2000 rpm suppose to be a pretty sweet motor
