  • aussie lockers (lunchbox)

are there any people here running lunchbox/aussie lockers? my interest has been sparked because of the $270 price tag vs. an ox for almost $1k. also possibly a smart upgrade if i upgrade axles in the next few years to a geared, locked dana 44 or something. although maybe i wouldnt need to upgrade my stock tj axles in order to get lifted and get 33s or 35s on there in the future? as i recall from a chart someone posted on here, 35s are a bit much for the rear axle but the front would be ok. BUT (and it's a really big butt) i have the problem of regearing the little 4 banger. it's as slow as i think i can handle with 31s and some mods on the stock (3.07 gears?) so im not sure on what i should do? also, maybe a stupid question, but say i got a dana 44 for the rear, can i move the dana 35 rear up to the front? i really dont know much about this stuff yet, im trying to learn so i can do some of these upgrades in the future. so what do ya guys think? aussie locker now or hold off a few years to do anything axle related until i have the money and can buy geared, selectable locker axles? any input is appreciated, as i said, i need to learn more about this stuff so i can plan out what mods i want to do on an extremely tight, high school(soon to be college kid) budget.

a 4 cyl TJ geared on 33's with a dana 30 front and dana 44 or ford 8.8 rear with aussie lockers would be a very good setup. i run a front aussie and have no complaints so far

from what i hear about aussie, it's a good bang for the buck unless you want to forkout the extra for the full locker and get rid of the weaker carrier

Ford 8.8 Rear or 44 with an aussie and d30 front.
4cyl 5spd TJs have 4.10s for gears. I am running 33s on stock gears with in an 8.8 w/ an aussie and d30 open and its fine. I'm upgrading to 4.88s and debating what locker to put up front. I like the ox because its selectable. Not too sure about the aussie up front because of the snow plow affect in the snow.

i didnt nkow anything about the snow plow affect- imguessing you just lose some turning ability. if you were only using 2 wheel drive on pavement for normal driving the lunchbox would not engage right? also does anyone know the highest gear ranges you could get for certain axles? 4.88s are the highest it seems anyone on here has but is there anything up in the 5.? or higher range? if so what axles/carriers can take them and how slow will they end up making my top speed be?

Sorry to complain can you split up your questions it is hard to read.

Lunch box locker or any auto locking locker like Detroit etc. lock up the axle when power is applied to the pinion and act like a open diff when your off the gas but locks back up under engine breaking.
So when you hit the gas going around a corner it locks up both tires turning the same speed equals it wants to drive straight. So on/off the gas goes between wanting to drive straight and turning I find it annoying.

As far as moving the dana 35 up front cannot happen that is a non steering axle.

You should check you're gears 4cly usually come with 4.11 gears to make up for the smaller engine.

4.88 is the lowest dana 30 can go, other axles can go lower. The lowest on high pinion axles is 5.38 there are some axles that will go down in the 7.17 range.

Easiest small upgrade axle is the ford 8.8 from a explorer same wheel bolt pattern. Or find Rubicon axles, Dana 44 with e-lockers and 4.11 gears.

The next step after that is 1 ton axle or axle that came out of 1 ton trucks. The axles are pretty wide you can have them narrowed for some $$.
You can change the 1 tons to custom wheel bolt patterns for a lot of $$.

Figure out what your ultimate plan for your vehicle is. If you want to start really wheeling hard and have big tires you would want the 1 ton axles in that case I would stay with a smaller jeep for now and save for the 1 tons. Keep an eye out for used build axles is your best bet. This sports is not cheap.

I will also speak for the lockrites, i run them front and rear with 33's, you cant beat the price and you dont have to take the carrier out to put them in..and you REALLY cant beat that.. As far as driving in the snow I dont have any complaints..ive never not been able to steer or anything.

thanks for the info guys, especially customcreations that stuff was real helpful. the ultimate plan is something im still not sure of so im trying to take it slow with small cheap mods here and there so for now the lunchbox seems like one that fits my bill perfectly. as for further in the future i do want to make the jeep bigger with a lift and maybe 35s tops if the 4 banger can handle it with the right gear ratio so potentially in the distant future ill get some bigger axles. as for now i need to keep it cheap so i think ill give an aussie a shot and see where that takes me.

I ran an Aussie in a Dana 30 (open Dana 35) and I thought it was the best upgrade I made.

I am pretty sure this is backwards in regards to the D30.

5.38 is the lowest a LOW pinion d30 (commonly found in a TJ,ZJ) can go.

4.88 is the lowest a HIGH pinion D30 (commonly found in a XJ) can go.

                              i'll bring the hate

dont know about aussie's but lock-rights bring the suck. they wear out, they skip, they stay locked sometimes acing like a spool. and they some time violently engage and disengage and that is what snaps shafts
