won't park

A friend of mine is very limited on funds and needs to find a car, another friend of mine has an Audi for sale, but the thing doesn't go into park...Personally, i'd just carry around some rocks and never park on hills, but whatever. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? How much [your idea] would be to fix? How difficult? Stuff like that.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

The transmission linkage might need to be adjusted or the tranny is shot.

who needs park, just make sure the e-brake is set.

sounds like either linkage or the parking pawl itself snapped.
