  • Axle Nut & The Hub

soo.... I was under the impression that the bearings could be ran just fine without the axle shafts and all the components associated with the axle shafts (Axle center nut). In an attempt to isolate the front differential to stop the pinion from moving (pinion bearing is shot) ......

Tonight I removed both shafts. Went for a test drive. Something immediately did not feel right with the front brakes (they were not working) I made it down the road from the shop about 100 yard, took one right hand turn onto the main road, was still trying to pump up the brakes, accelerated a little, made it to approximately 25-35mph (no speedo) and wammm the right Hub's Bearing separated... Long story short, that bearing has less than 3,000 miles on it, I've only had it for about 4 months, it's seen one trip to RC. It was the better of the two bearings, but still.... Took the brackets for the calipers clean off the knuckles with it. Jeep skidded to a stop and I was able to keep it in the lane fortunately, I think the tire is even still intact. IT was just dangling by the brake line, which from what I can tell is also still intact.

Got it back in the shop with the bucket tractor with Dan Potter's superb operating skills. Tomorrow I'm gonna try hunting down another knuckle and bearing..... thank god the rear brakes work as good as they do and I wasn't going faster, and was wearing my seatbelt ... i'll try and get some aftermath pics tomorrow

that sucks dude but if i recall correctly the axle and nut is what holds the 2 pieces of the bearing together

I keep going through everything in my head over and over again. Just don't see what exactly would hold it together? It seems to me that that nut would pull the shaft outwards away from the carrier, so it's not like it's holding it against the carrier is it? The nut pulls the shaft outwards and sandwiches the bearing against what exactly? I'm really at a loss for wards on this one So think what your telling me is that If I wanted to Keep the diff from moving, I would have to separate each axle shaft at the U joints and run just the outer part of the shaft. Right?

Yes, you have to run just the outer shaft.

whatta cluster fuck this is. I was so pissed I was about to call whoever the fuck makes that shitty bearing I bought at 2AM asking them how they sleep at night It's the last week of classes, I'm flat broke, don't even have enough money for a new knuckle/ball joints and yet another wheel bearing. I shoulda spent the night doing the pinion bearing and be done with it.

MY current issue with my axle is one I'm sure man others have gone through. It's a Dana 30 from 1987, It needs all 4 ball joints, pinion bearing/seal, Inner axle seals, now yet another bearing, one new knuckle. And to top it all off it has small diameter shafts and small U joints. SO what's a man to do? Do I spend the money making this axle wheelable/streetable again? Add it all up, it doesn't seem like it's worth the money to me. So I'm gonna get the thing so we can roll it out of the shop and out of the way. And then it's time to start looking at other options. AS IN 3/4 or 1 ton axles. I really really like the 3/4 ton Dana44 and Dana 60 axles blakdot just purchased. They are the perfect width and strength For what I want (I never plan on running a tire bigger than a 35)

That being said there is a 1965 J10 in the junkyard not more than 45 minutes from here. I'm not sure if it's 4wd but I'm going to find out. Help me figure out what that truck could have for possible axles?

the shaft compresses the bearing together. without it the bearing will not stay together...now you know

Yeah lesson learned. Thank god I wasn't going faster. It's back together now, minus one caliper. It will be sitting a short time until I find a replacement /upgrade.
