  • 8.8 axle question

I have a question about the axleshaft on a 8.8. Here's the issue:

My brother has a 1990 Mustang GT and he went to get the tires replaced today. One of the rear tires was unable to be removed. According to the guy at the tire store, when they went to remove the rim, the lug was spinning because the stud was spining making it impossible to remove the rim from the axleshaft.

    Question:
    1. Without torching off the rim, do you have any sugguestions to remove the rim?

    2. Is it possible to remove the axleshaft without removing the tire? I was thinking that if it is at all possible, I would be able to grind/cut the back of the stud(s) out. It has drum brakes though.

Thats what I am thinking. Will it rip out the brakes or anything else? I know that the drum will come with it. Then I should be able to get to the studs.

be sure to work the adjuster in so the shoes dont catch the rust ring on the drum

depending on the wheel (if you want to risk screwing it up) just cut the nut off

Is it the pony wheels? on it with the short lug nut? if so they are extremely hard to cut the stud off from the front. If you get the axle out tack the stud in place then take off the lug. then replace the stud

He put the Cobra R type wheels on it so he doesn't want to cut. I think Ill ajust the shoes down and try pulling the shaft. Thanks guys!
