Jeep cherokee tank holds 18 gallons of gas. Corey doesnt believe me but on my drives between VA and CT , but I get 25-26 every time I make the drive. Today I just got 464 miles on a tank of gas before I got scared and pulled over for gas. And that was also sitting in traffic for almost an hour on the Cross Bronx Expy, and some city driving in NJ. I probably could have stretched it to 475 if I drove easier. Also, i was averaging 75mph, about 2200 rpms on the highway. Im pretty sure it would be possible to squeeze 500 miles out of a single, 18 gallon tank of gas in a 4.0 5 Speed cherokee. Im gonna try it next time I come home in November, and have a gas can and back and just run the bitch dry. Im also gonna try getting behind a 18 wheeler and draft him to cut back on drag, and keep it at 65 mph.

Any other ideas or things I can do to increase MPG's or squeeze a few extra miles out of it?

    is this thread a mockery?

i dont understand shit like this.

how can a stock jeep's (generous rating) of 21 be surpassed this much by a super high mileage XJ?

I've stuffed 19.3 gallons of gas into my tank already.....just saying...I think you can cram 20.....but I've never gotten more than 20 mpg.

This thread is no bullshit, no mockery. I drove 464 miles, today, with 18 gallons of gas in my tank. Stock cherokee, 3.07 gears, AX-15 tranny. Not sure why nobody seems to believe it, but its true. And Im pretty sure I could pull off 500 miles on a tank if I dont take off from stops like an ass and shift when the indicator tells me to not at 2500 rpms. Im sure drafting an 18 wheeler for 100 miles will help me achieve it too.

you dont get why people find it hard to believe a 200k mileage XJ is getting 26mpg????????? lol, not saying youre lying, but id say its easy to see why people think that

              especially goin 75.

Well I can see how people might find it hard to believe, but how can I prove it other than have someone ride along with me and physically see? Dunno. But i think its possible to hit the 500 mark and im gonna do some research on it and try and make it happen.

Oh, I believe - I got an auto with 3.55, 140,000 miles, and get 18-20 mpg around town.

i believe it. my jeep stock got 22mpg @ 65 mph. the 5spds are geared taller in 5th for slightly better MPGs at a slightly higher speed than the autos. and ive pushed my RS to 35mpg on the highway and its rated at 28 highway.

                              bump..

Attempting the 500 mile thing this week, any tips that might squeeze me any extra mpg, even if it is marginal, let me know what I should do.

Would over inflating my tires to a higher psi help at all (less rolling resistance). Im not worried about tire wear, after the drive is over they will never be on the jeep again.

What basic engine maintenance could I preform that would give me maxiumum performance? My last tune up was at 170k and im at 201k right now.

I know most of those gas saving things are bullshit but is there any fuel additive that would help?

My plan is to fill up (18 gallons) and drive like a pansy all the way home. Very slow from take offs, shifting when appropriate, and 65mph with cruise control. A certain spots in my trip, I can go 2 or more hours with cruise on and not having to touch the brake. If i dont hit traffic, im think 490 is where im gonna run out, ive gotten to 478 on a tank before. Its 550 miles from Hampton to Griswold CT, so if I should run out somewhere on the CT shoreline on 95 somewhere if this works. Im running the tank dry, and having a gas can with 5 gallons so when I run out I can make it to a gas station.

                              This should be fun
