the schraider valve is on the fuel rail, right in the front of cyl 1. but i would put a fuel pressure gauge on it and see how long it takes for you to get full pressure there to see if the check valve is bad.

      update

ok well i purged it just to see if i would have any luck and sure enough i didnt. so now onto checking pressure, and more than likely replacing my fuel pump, yay for dropping the whole tank!

you don't need to drop the tank to do a fuel pump in an xj, as far as i remember

Every diagram and everything I've ever seen contradicts this. I've never done it before though, so this is good news.

                    From this link:

DO NOT STRIKE THE PUMP FLOAT AGAINST THE TANK OPENING!(Or anything else!)
You will damage the sending unit and have a fuel gauge that misreads!

                    Now you tell me.

I remember doing this with RJ. The locking ring can be a PITA if its all rusted up, and be extra careful with the float, as it is easy to damage since you are all contorted when you are removing and reinstalling the pump.

is that cause you have a spot above the tank with no flaws? if thats the case me too.
