My TJ is a 97 4 banger with 31's, 5 speed, and 3.07's. It was ok stock, but once i put the bigger tires on it sucked. It is fine around town, but once you hit a hill it is bad and have to downshift right away. I topped out at about 73 in 4th gear. 5th gear was slower. The motor wil really go forever tho and runs pretty good. It really is not that bad, but if you can get a 6 cyl i highly recommend it.

had both the 6 and the 4 yj's both 5 speeds. in all honesty i'm looking to buy a tj too and i'd rather have the 4cyl. i'll take whatever i find but i'd rather have the 4. its so much easier to work on because you have 2 feet of room infront of it. like everyone else has said its not that bad but obviously not fast. i like wheelin my 4 in the woods better than the 6. felt lighter or more nimble for some reason. your less likely to have snappage with the less power but it has plenty for the woods. i drove my 4 banger to florida no problem. made it in 17 hours, same time as any other car i would have been driving. go for the 4 if u find one. if 70-75mph top speeds on the highway bother you that much then gear it.

the only downfall to the 4banger wrangler is the ax5 transmission. it fucking sucks. i put 5 professional remans in my old one. on the 5th i finally put an aftermarket ax5 with stronger bearings and gears in it and it lasted fine for the year i had it before i sold it. but pirate has a write up with all part #'s and everything for an easy ax15 swap. plan on that, you'll need it.

i'm looking for a trail truck/weekend warrior, not a dd tho

thanks for your help guys. Most of the TJ under 5k with less then 100xxxmiles are all 4 bangers, so thats probably what I'm going to end up with.

Yea its hard to find a 6cyl TJ on the cheap, like everyone else said. On hills they suck the nuts, I personally would never get a 4 cyl.. thats just me though.

Im with dana on this one.

and yes josh zach vaugns rig that eugene rolled was a 4cyl
