  • Need bit of tech.

If I were to fab my own rear window out of plexi glass or something would you think its possible or worth it. I don't have much money so I want a cheap and easy way out of the problem its been broken for like three weeks and i am tired of it. Thanks for your advise.

ppl make them out of lexan. but its illegal and scratches easily. if u tint the lexan it looks just like glass tho.

just buy a sheet the size i'm guess a 4X4' sheet would do and cut it to the shape of the back window. drill some pilot holes for the screws and bam. new window.

If your going to do it use Lexan not Plexiglas. Plexiglas cracks really easy, it is hard to cut or drill with out it splitting.

I think it is only the front windshield that needs to be DOT approved.

On trucks and SUVs only the front 2 windows and the Windshield need to be clear all the others can be solid black if you want.

You can buy speed glass which is coated lexan for scratch resistance you can run windshield wipers on them that is what all the race cars use, you can buy them molded for most front windshields from 1/8 to 1/4 thick but I cannot find one for an XJ. You can also just buy it in a flat sheet.

Normal Lexan scratches really easy. You can sand it polish it and us a heat gun to get the scratches out but it will get old fast.

It is about 50% lighter than glass but it isn't as stiff you might need a support in the middle I made a rear windshield for my grand wagoner it sagged so much in the middle it wouldn't close I had to add a support in the middle.

Lexan is not cheap, when I bought the sheet for the rear window it was $140. You can buy it in Clear, Smoked or Gold tint.

You can get it from modern plastics in Bridgeport.

      Good luck.
