  • ZJ 44's...

I would assume even with the 30 splines these things get eaten alive with anything bigger than 33's, correct?

I would imagine you are talking about the D44a?

I have researched this around some zj forums, they are quite capable up to 33's but trussing is pretty much a must if you ever plan to throw a locker in or wheel it pretty hard. Not to mention it's damn hard to even find a locker, the only company that makes one is Aussie and they only manufacture them in very limited numbers. Your best bet is to find one used, and even then they are expensive. I have even heard of people successfully running 35's, but once again you have strengthen the shit out of them.

Another problem because the center section is aluminum, and likes to heat up and cool down very rapidly, the bearings in the diff tend to wear out quickly or something of that nature IIRC.

You would probably want to figure out some sort of skid underneath the center section as well, I have heard of the center section cracking after a really hard slam.

A lot of assumptions. I figured even with the 30 splines, that the necks are weakened in some way shape or form because jeep loves to gimp good equipment. And as far as aluminum housing goes, that wouldn't be a problem unless slammed into something. I was more so concerned with the axle shaft diameter.

I'm also keeping mind it will be bolted to a 300ft/lb v8 and likely ox'ed at some point. Maybe 32's...

they dont make ox lockers for the 44a, unless its some new thing. they use 44a centers in vettes and vipers so strength in relation to horsepower is quite good, but like evan said it needs to be beefed in the tubes and youll want a nice beefy diff cover.

BTF has a cover for the 44a and mountain valley customs makes a truss//skid for it...theres plenty of guys running 33s+ on the 44a locked with no problems...

i read somewhere that the ring gear is comparable to a Dana 60's...not a BAD axle for us ZJ WJ guys if you have one stock or can get your hands on one for cheap...aussie makes the only locker for it other than the WJ vari lock version and aussie from time to time does make batches of them...but like said ur better off finding one used...
