  • no 4 low

Last time at RC my jeep lost 4 low. I was able to get a few times since. Now it wont engage at all. I have 4 high and neutral. I shifted the tcase at the tcase and it still wont engage. I guess something internally is fucked. Is it cheap to repair? Or should i get a new tcase?

did you bang up your crossmember? did you check your linkage?

are you sure you got the shift arm into the 4 lo position? keep in mind the wheels gotta be rolling for it to engage

The shifter is hitting the case. I rolled it back and forth and all you hear is it clicking.

I do have a 242 I can swap in but is the 242 longer then the 231?

          Is it a 23 spline? I'll trade you a 242 for a 231.

          I also have a 21 spline 231,

I always found it best to go into low range with the tranny in Nuetral but do it quick.
The drag in the transmission will start spinning the T-case gear and you will not be able to get it in once that happens shut off your engine and try it with the engine off.
Engine off Tranny in Neutral should be your safest from grinding your gears.

You will not be able to get it into gear if your are in park and the tires are not moving. The gears/dog have to line up, one end or the other have to rotate until lined up, they are tapered to help engage easier but one gear has to be free to rotate (neutral).

My guess it is not the T-case, the linkage is not adjusted correct or if it is hitting like you said.

            I have a 5 speed. The 242 is a 21 spline.

Ok I pulled the 231. The only time I can get low range is when I pull on the input shaft. I put the 242 in. I know I need to adjust the linkage because I dont have 2wd.

I got fulltime but all the way forward 4lock doesnt feel right. Plus it makes some noise and is jumpy.

Well I cant adjust it to get 2wd. If I get 2wd then I dont have 4low. In 2wd the jeep is fine. Once in fulltime it makes noise and its really jumpy on start off. I disconnected the linkage so I have 2wd.

sounds like something isnt all good inside there. either the shift fork bushings are preventing a full engagement, or its otherwise fucked.

Maybe its because I have to much play in my front driveshaft? it moves a good quarter rotation before it locks unlike the rear which barley moves. It only makes noise when you first start off.

Don't those linkages adjust up and down as well as front to back?

Up and down will give you more or less travel so you can hit both extremes.

Front to back adjust the shifter position.

Make sure the shifter is fully in T-Case detente there should be no pressure on the linkage you should be able to pull it off and put it back on without the T-case are moving in each gear.

I do have a 21 spline NP231 if your interested.
