  • for those who've geared a dana 30

i did 4.56's in my rear 44 about a month ago, and i've been waiting to change the oil in that diff and make sure it holds up before i decided to tackle the front end too. i had the jeep in to have the rear axle seals done yesterday and when i picked it up today he said the pattern is perfect in the rear, and that the R&P are wearing very nicely.

Now that i'm confident i can do this without it blowing up, my question is:
when i tightened up the pinion nut to crush the collar, my impact was not strong enough to crush the collar all the way, and i had to use a 4ft ratchet to tighten it enough. i noticed the d30 crush collar is way smaller than the 44's, do you guys think i'll be able to get away with just using the impact to tighten it down?

              Wrong.
Every 44 I've done uses shims. It's a much better method.

You can use either the axle doesn't care, you usually get whatever was stock.
Crush sleeves are quicker but harder to reset when change the yoke/pinion seal especially a trail repair.
You can can always get crush sleeve eliminator kit (pinion preload shims) for any axle. That's what I would do for any off-road vehicle, now you can just tighten the crap out of the pinion not with no worries.

As for the question I've never been able to crush a sleeve with an impact wrench even the little D30 I usually use a large breaker bar and a pipe wrench on the yoke unless it is the CV yoke then I made a plate that bolts to the yoke with a bar welded to it. Be careful it doesn't take much to over load it.

i've gotta agree with heavymetal on this one for the obvious reason that when i took both axles apart, there just magically happened to be a crush sleeve on both pinions.. so one would think that those axles use crush sleeves, no?

i know that you can use preload shims instead of the crush sleeve, but i dont really want to take the time to get the exact amount of shims on there that i need, and have to take it apart numerous times. i got the pattern on the 44 right just be using the stock thickness of shims behind the pinion bearing, and then slowly tightening the pinion nut until the pattern and preload were in the acceptable range

both my XJ44 and my HP30 DO NOT HAVE crush sleeves. take the time and set it up with the shims. makes swapping out a pinion if needed much easier

i believe a LP d30 uses a crush sleve. HP d30 shims. Every d44 ive done has been shims. Never liked chrush sleves. Seen them losen up and wipe out bearings. Shims are the way to go. If its not right, pull it apart, add or take away a shim and set it up spot on problem free.
