I'm thinking about towing someones cherokee to rausch, (130 miles of highway), the trailer i have is just over 2k lbs, and a cherokee is over 3k lbs. think its a bad idea to tow it with my 5.9 zj?

You're gonna be 6000lbs. I'd say maybe ok with weight distribution hitch and electric brakes. Those hills on 81 will put anything towing to work.

i have a tow brake, but no weight distributing hitch.

this is the trailer, it weighs more than i thought, at 2700lbs

from my limited experience, X2 on the WD hitch particularly with a coil sprung ZJ that's likely not meant to take that tongue weight generally.

I agree with what's been said above. It can be done, but you'll want a weight distribution hitch with the coil springs. Also check all control arm bushings etc. Any play at all will be felt when pulling that kind of weight.

Stock XJ is 3800lb I believe. I'm assuming it is not stock so maybe round to 4000 for minimal offroad parts. 6700lb at the minimum. I don't think I'd wanna do that with a 3800lb coil sprung unibody thing. Even with WDH and electric brakes.

I would fully expect that transmission to explode

yeah, its a brand new trans, just put it in 3 days ago.

but the 46re is the same trans used in a ram 1500 with a 5.9 right? i wouldn't think that would be my weakest link

Why are you so motivated to do this anyway? It would likely make more sense to most people out there to bring the important spare parts you need for the respective vehicles like if you have stock steering grab an extra. It sounds like the xj you're planning on towing is nothing wild (I'm guessing from the weight) so is there really a need for a tow? I've only failed to get home once ever, and that was after our crawl daddy race and have only towed to one event which was a real race. Let us know what you decide on.

The best way to do it is don't. One of three things will happen: that brand new trans will explode, your brakes won't be enough to slow you down and you tank a Mazda, or your hitch comes flying off. Just don't do it.

the polls are in, i might just drag an empty tow dolly in case one of us does not make it back.

Tow dolly is the better idea. Hes referring to my XJ....better question is would my XJ dolly his ZJ if that breaks LOL

the AW4 is very VERY bad with heat dissipation and its already a torque/power robber due to that.
