  • 5.9 249 > 242 (95 XJ)

i was wondering if anyone knew what length the input is on the 5.9s 249 t case

the 242 case i want to swap in is dated 6/95 but it looks like the input is .750 ( but im not really sure if that is the measurement you go by

anyone got any info, i would love not having to pull the case apart and swap inputs.

you need the 249 input shaft. Or a 96-98 242

Looks like that T-case input is in need some polishing.

If your input is too long you can always cut it or add a small spacer.
Also if is to long it might still fit inside the trans without any issue.

If it is too short look to see how much spline engagement you have and where the seal rides. I think it was Teraflex that used to make an offset seal for this problem.

You can. Or do a front case swap. 1,000,000,000,000 times easier to find a 96-98 case. Factual proven number.

                  easier but not cheaper.

T-cases are pretty easy to rebuild.

True. That being said, a lot of XJ people can't even give 242s away because everyone has to have a 231...

finace will be comuting in the jeep this winter, i like the way the 249 is in the snow, that why i like the idea of the 242, and the fact that 92xjlaredo gave me it for free.

im pissing trans fluid bad, so the 249 is coming out anyways

i rebuilt the ax5 in my yj enough times, how hard could a transfercase be?

The rear seal for the trans is the easiest thing in the world.

the 242 is alittle tricky, you need to pull out a roll pin on the shifter fork with an easy out.
Other than that it is pretty straight forward.

                            Just google it

almost got it done yesterday, until i got the wrong input seal

Any ideas of the 4wd indicatir, the 249 one screws in, but is much longer, im afriad it will bind on the shift fork rod
