No start/weak cranking

  • No start/weak cranking

    My 98 jeep Cherokee won't start
    It is a squishy kind of crank or no crank I have checked
    Ground on the block and the battery
    Battery
    Starter shorted out
    I replaced the starter still nothing
    Tried starting in n and d
    Any ideas?

    Get a multimeter. Disconnect the battery cable from the battery and starter. Connect one lead to one end, and the other lead to the other end of the cable. With the meter set to dc voltage. See how many volts it reads.

      I will try that tomorrow after work.
      What voltage am I looking for the standard 12v?
      It was fine then just at school it kind cranked over funny, started fine at the gas station then died at work.

        Should be less than .5v
        Have you tested the battery?
        Also have you turned the engine over by hand to make sure everything turns free;

            Bad grounds.
            Cleaned the block side and the unibody side grounds and it fired right up
