  • anyone have pointers for me?

recently acquired a new(hopefully working) PCM for my XJ, thanks Caleb...been about 3-4 months since i last drove it. had the old PCM sent to a re manufacturing shop in NC which told me that the ECM was totally fried (I trust that the guy wasn't just trying to get my to buy one off him). the issue that was present was run for about 20 minutes then sputter and then die. wait till it was cool again, run fine for 20 minutes to half an hour...same thing basically every time it came up to operating temperature. i just bought a brand new battery and a CPS for it and im thinking of waking the grumpy old bitch up tomorrow. what else on the 96s should i check? I know some of them are problematic and probably the worst year electrically and whatnot...id really hate to plug a new PCM in it and fry it instantly because of something i should have replaced etc. to me it had the symptoms of bad or going bad CPS but having a fried PCM makes me kinda rethink it. i tested the CPS and it was okay, but who knows with a bad PCM? anything thats like insanely common for this year?

lol yeah probably next on the list. however i dont feel an O2 sensor will instantly fry a PCM

If you bought an aftermarket CPS throw it out. I chased a headache for weeks and it was a brand new after market piece of shit CPS.

ive never put a CPS in it before, guy that had it before me did when he bought it like 2 years ago (how long ive had the jeep) he said it was aftermarket and that one worked fine. i know theyre half and half but ive had good luck with them so far. so ill take a $30 chance and if that dont fix it ill get an OEM one.

sounds like a grounding issue (probably what fired the PCM), or an issue with the coolant temp sensor

yeah grounding issues are what im going with here. gonna replace battery CPS and PCM all at once and hope that does the trick also looking for mega grounds everywhere and fixing whatever ones i find. coolant temp sensor has been replaced...twice lol that was the first suspect actually

Check your wiring harness at the firewall behind the valve cover. Mine worn through the loom and through the insulation of a wire. That is very common.
