  • Rear Diff Noise.

    This is the noise I originally heard when I pulled over in Berlin. Haha.

    Figured it was a bad bearing but I just pressed a new one on the other night. Same noise. Ideas?

    Here's a video. The sound starts at around 8 seconds. At around 45 seconds you can hear it really lock up good. It sounds like an air tool or something. It's that clinging that sounds like bells. I am not referring to the backing plate rubbing that is also audible.

            pull the rear diff cover and check the gears. Also check that the pinion nut is tight as well. Jack up the rear end and spin the tires and listen for any noises. Did you put a new race in the axle housing?

              Pulling the diff cover now. Will report back with pictures and all that cool stuff.

              I'm trying to see if i can get it up on jack stands with the diff cover off and see if i can get it to make that noise. It seems to only happen when the jeep hits a bump or something along those lines. (Or maybe that's just a coincidence.)

              The race came on the bearing. I slid in the entire assembly in one shot, bolted it down tight, and drove it. That noise occurred. Here's a picture of the axle shaft right before i put it in the jeep.

                this is a xj 44? that is the wrong retaining plate for the xj44

                  Yes. XJ 44.

                  Should of mentioned. That retainer is because it has discs on it. It's an 03-06 Rubicon retainer.

                  pulling the diff cover now. got distracted last night.

                        Can i replace both of those without fucking up the gears and backlash and what not if that is the problem?

                        How would i diagnose that?

                        Need a case spreader to pull the carrier or no?

                            that D44 has a new pinion bearing i think, i remember i took it off and came to find out the kid before me never really tightened the yoke on it, took like 5in lbs to remove the nut.

                            i think that noise is the metal seal guard thing that spins with the yoke vibrating or getting stuck. that may have made a noise with me too but i said fuck it, drove like 80 for a bit and never heard it again.

                            i also have a home made case spreader for that if you need to use it, brother built it last December when we were working on that.

                              You couldn't be more right. It's fucking terrible at low speeds but once you get to like 70 it just smooths out. Needless to say my jeep isn't always doing 70 so i kind of need to figure out what that is before driving it around. That sound is god awful.

                              I'm going to check the yoke as well to see if it's tight. Hopefully it's something i can see without pulling the carrier as honestly i don't want to do that.

                              I might need that case spreader though to pull the carrier if worse comes to worse. I've seen people use Hi-lifts for this, but i don't really want to buy one of those either.

                              Is the piece you think it is visible from the outside of the diff or do i need to be looking at it from the inside out?
